Guide to travel by motorcycle in South America

If you want to be impressed by spectacular landscapes, you can not miss the most amazing roads to travel by motorcycle in South America. You will not regret it! ( GUIDE TO TRAVEL BY MOTORCYCLE IN SOUTH AMERICA ) Without a doubt, a motorcycle tour in South America is one of the best experiences every motorcyclist can have, and from the first kilometer to the last, it is a spectacular trip. We know this and that is why in Ecuador Bike Rental, we wanted to prepare a complete guide on motorcycle travel in South America that will be of great help if you are seriously considering the possibility of making this tour. There are so many people who have ventured into going around the world by motorcycle without having been before to South America, one of the most beautiful and most traveled continents by motorcycle. This is a ride we guarantee you won’t regret. It’ll be one of the best experiences of your life. Pay attention, as by the end, you’ll be eager for this trip. To travel by motorcycle in South America, what do I need? No doubt, to enjoy it to the fullest it is important that you meet a wide range of indispensable requirements. We show you the most important ones: – Motorcycle in perfect condition. Undoubtedly the most important thing on a motorcycle trip anywhere is to have a motorcycle that is not only comfortable but also in perfect condition to be able to meet the requirements of the trip without any problem. Therefore, it is essential that, before starting your trip, you take the motorcycle with which you are going to travel through South America to your trusted workshop, to check it, verify that it is in perfect condition and repair any faults it may have. For bike modifications, it’s best to do them near home for easier access to spares and trusted hand labor. – Documents. As far as documentation is concerned, it is essential to have a passport. In addition, you will need to have a motorcycle driver’s license, which is absolutely mandatory. We also recommend that, before starting your trip, you contact the different embassies of the countries where you are going to go to find out if you need some kind of documentation or a special visa because the requirements change depending on the country of origin of the visitor. Although, if you are from Canada, USA, Latin America or Europe you do not need more paperwork than your passport. Another thing worth noting is the paperwork that needs to be done at every country´s border. Most countries in South America request you to purchase a SOAT (road insurance), which is not expensive (around USD 70 per visiting month, depending on where you are). This is mandatory at least for Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Besides the SOAT, arrange your migration papers and temporary entrance for your motorcycle at customs. Usually, all these three things can be done in offices one near the other. And depending on which border you are crossing, the wait time can be as short as 5 minutes. Local knowledge prevails as it’s always the most up-to-date. For instance, there are some borders where SOAT can’t be easily purchased, like Deshaguadero, between Bolivia and Peru, near Puno. And despite this issue, it’s no excuse for local authorities to give you some problems if you get stopped. So much as to put your motorcycle away. Remember, SOAT can be purchased mainly at the borders. Once inland, is much more complicated. Motorcycle tours in South America Obviously, there is not a single motorcycle route in South America. In fact, there are so many options you won’t know which to choose, as each offers something different for every rider’s preference. With this in mind, from Ecuador Bike Rental we are going to share with you some of the routes that we like the most to ride a motorcycle on the continent, which will give you the chance to admire breathtaking landscapes: Route 40 Route 40 is perhaps the most famous route in South America, which crosses the entire continent from north to south, and from south to north. It is a mythical route among bikers, and to travel it is an authentic paradise, given its high degree of adventure and its spectacular landscapes. Carretera Austral The Carretera Austral is identified by the fact that it runs through Chilean Patagonia in its entirety. It consists of a narrow road with a spectacular view, so riding along it will be immemorial. We recommend crossing between Chile and Argentina to appreciate the highlights of both countries to the fullest. The road to the end of the world There is also the route to the end of the world, which consists of crossing all of Tierra del Fuego, from the Chilean side to the Argentinean side, and we consider it one of the most recommended routes of the motorcycle trip through South America. Here you have to keep in mind that the Argentinean side is the on-road way, but the Chilean side is off-road, it will depend on the type of adventure you are looking for so you can decide which way to go. Of course, on both sides, you will enjoy magical landscapes. Ruta de los Lagos, Bolivia. In Bolivia, you will find this iconic and famous road, which does not offer any type of service along its route, so it is essential to be well prepared to travel it, since you will not find gas stations, workshops, restaurants, services, etc. Here the GPS will become your best ally. But that will not deprive you of the beautiful Latin American landscapes. 7 Lakes Road. 7 Lakes Road is located in Argentina and specifically starts from the Lanin Volcano, towards Bariloche and El Bolson. Epic, we must add that it is perfectly maintained countryside, so you don’t have to worry about it. Totally recommended. Jama Pass. One of our favorites on our motorcycle trip

How does an automatic transmission motorbike work?

Lately, there has been a lot of talk about motorcycles with automatic transmission, but currently, Honda is the only brand that sells models with automatic transmission. Furthermore, various configurations and displacements of engines incorporate it, propelling motorcycles of diverse natures. ( How does an automatic transmission motorbike work ). Automatic transmissions, commonplace in cars for nearly a century, are less common in the motorcycle industry. Bikes’ small size and light weight make them unsuitable for the typically bulkier and heavier automatic transmissions. While common in motorcycles, variable-pitch and centrifugal transmissions aren’t classified as automatics due to their single-speed nature and lack of gearboxes. The application of CVTs, known for their simplicity and practicality, is limited in high-performance motorcycles. Electric motorcycles Today, electric motorcycles are also proliferating, with most featuring single-speed transmissions and no clutch, as the permanent magnet motor drives directly. On the other hand, there have been some automatic motorcycles with combustion engines with gearboxes and electrohydraulically operated clutch, but they have not enjoyed much success, nor have they lasted a long time.   In 2010, however, everything changed with the introduction of the Honda VFR1200F, a model developed by the Japanese giant in two versions. One model features a conventional six-speed transmission. While the other incorporates a six-speed dual-clutch transmission with electro-hydraulic control—a system Honda dared to include. This technology, known as DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), is 12 years old and was also installed on the now-extinct VFR1200F, VFR1200X Crosstourer, NC700S/X, Integra, and NM4-01 Vultus. Today, we find it on models like the CRF1100L Africa Twin, X-ADV, NC750X, CMX1100 Rebel, GL1800 Gold Wing, and the new NT1100. Thus, we can appreciate Honda’s advanced automatic transmission system across various motorcycle types and engine configurations. How does the dual-clutch work? DCT is a system that automates the use of gearboxes and clutches. Its main feature: two clutches on separate shafts, one sliding within the other, offering distinct gear engagement. Double shaft, the first clutch is connected to the odd gear, while the second clutch is connected to the even gear. Compared to a conventional gearbox, this system also differs in the absence of a clutch and caliper. Their benefits include user-friendly shifting, simplified operation, and enhanced comfort by reducing the rider’s tasks during driving. The DCT also ensures a more effective transmission, as it is responsible for keeping the engine engaged in optimal conditions. Another notable feature distinguishing it from the aforementioned CVT is the ability to use engine braking during cornering. It is also worth noting that you can choose from three powertrain modes to suit different driving styles. As a result, the DCT system has two autopilot modes (Drive and Sport), as well as a sequential mode. In the automatic modes, the gearbox is “intelligently” activated in both upshift and downshift. However, in sequential mode, the driver manually shifts gears using buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. In drive mode, the engine operates at low revs for comfort, fuel efficiency, and is ideal for highway driving. In Sport mode, shifting occurs as engine speed increases, which means you’ll have a happier drive. The sequential mode is for sporty driving, allowing the driver to choose when to upshift or downshift. Choose between functions  To choose between different functions, the Drive and Sport automatic mode buttons are located on the right handle. Also on the right edge, there is a switch that allows us to choose the automatic or sequential mode.     The operation is simple. After starting the engine and releasing the parking brake, shift from neutral to gear by pressing the right-side button. Once the indicator display confirms the selected shift mode, simply press the accelerator pedal to begin driving. In addition, it is possible to switch to one of the automatic modes and upshift or downshift at the driver’s request using the buttons on the left, thus turning with the engine at low revs or using the Dynamic.   On the other hand, while in the two automatic modes we will never reach the ignition cut-off. As the system always upshifts before or does not allow downshifting, in the sequential mode it is possible because it is the driver himself who decides when to shift. DCT engines provide multiple riding modes, including off-road settings on models like the Africa Twin and X-ADV. They also coordinate with driving aids like traction control or hill start assist. Over the years, Honda has refined the system, resulting in faster and smoother gear changes with each iteration. Adapted to the bike’s purpose, whether for touring, trail riding, utility, or maxi-scooter applications. | Visit Us | How does an automatic transmission motorbike work? | Our website

5 tips for traveling by motorbike.

Below we review 5 tips for traveling by motorbike, all obvious, of course, but it doesn’t hurt to keep them in mind from time to time, especially if it’s your first trip. This time we bring you a brief excerpt of tips and recommendations on how to travel by motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle is not an easy task and from the beginning, we have encouraged you to do it with friends and family. Sometimes, however, the situation that attracts us the most is getting lost alone, and gaining a new experience or giving free rein to the sense of adventure reassures us. For them, this brief is instructive, because it never hurts to review these 5 points. 1 – Check your motorbike. About when to check your motorbike’s condition, you should pay attention while you are having the last ride, and make a list of things that you should check for as soon as you’re done with that leg. Memory is fragile, so write them down if you are planning to spare the rest of the day for other things. Or, if you think the trip will be long and arduous, the safest thing to do, is to look for a place where you can have a safe checkup while you are on your trip or, shortly after your return. In addition to the review itself, it is often necessary to replace some components and consumables in the middle of nowhere, so we encourage you to check: What to check? • Tires: in good condition (both), thread (at least 4 mm), please don’t make’em last 10 years, the tire “expiration” date is located on one side. It indicates the year and week of manufacture. Consider replacing every 5 years for long rides or high-torque bikes. You can keep the current ones for your local outings. • Brakes: Brake pads are in good condition. All of them, front and rear. Also always check the inner pad, the pad that fits inside the caliper, a minimum of 3mm is recommended. For the brake fluid itself, check its duration and that it is in good condition (minimum transparency…). This does not apply to mineral brake fluid. • Drive kit: more precisely the chain, the sprocket, and the sprocket only that do not have very sharp teeth. The chain is clean and greased. For rides exceeding 500 km, lubricate the chain every 500 km (up to 1000 km) with a small bottle of chain grease. • Oil: at the correct level, neither below nor above the maximum level. If it is tanner a year old, also change it. Mineral oils have their own policies about this. • Coolant: Bear in mind that coolant expands more than oil when hot. Avoid filling it to the max when cold. Certainly not below minimum. Recommended, in the middle. Ensure you’re aware of your bike’s coolant type. If you suspect a small leak and can’t visit a shop immediately, carry spare coolant. 2 – Tire pressure. In our experience, the component is crucial for assessing the product’s condition, especially tires, as mentioned earlier. You always have to be attentive that it has good pressure and to make good use of them. For this, always be guided by the pressures listed in your bike’s manual. We can give you some tips, but your starting point should always be those specified by the manufacturer. Now, the little things; For trips, especially if you are traveling with a passenger or if the bike is more loaded than usual with panniers or backpacks, you can increase the pressure by 0.1 / 0.2 BAR. If your trip is going to have a lot of highways or straight stretches with high speed, a small tip is to increase the aerodynamic load, especially the rear, this way we will avoid noticeable wear in the center and maintain the curvature of the tires for longer. Another detail that you must take into account is the altitude pressure at which we inflate the tire. Tire inflation at a service station differs at high altitudes like 1,800 m compared to sea level. If you inflate a tire at an altitude of 1800 m, and your destination or travel route is along the coast, you will notice that the tire “lost” pressure and will act strong and heavy. Conversely, if you inflate at sea level and go up the mountain, tire pressure will increase and reduce tire grip (contact patch decrease), reducing grip and increasing the risk of skidding. 3 – Stop every 200 km. Stopping to rest every 200 km (or similar distance) is just a guideline. Fatigue often strikes around the 2-hour mark of driving. In many cases, the fuel autonomy of a motorbike usually corresponds to this distance, but there are bikes like the KTM ADVENTURE R 1290 that have an even greater range of 400 km, so you have to be careful because, with many kilometers behind, you start to make silly mistakes and lose focus. Hence, we advise stopping every 200 km to stretch, hydrate, and refresh with a drink or snack to prevent fatigue. 4 – Calculation between gas stations. On your trip, you must have well-controlled gas stations and refueling points. Distinguish between rest stops and fuel stops to ensure adequate time for both. Plan accordingly for a balanced journey. When planning your trip, factor in fuel stops based on your bike’s range and locate available gas stations along your route. Google Maps or Maps-me is your friend, use them, especially now that they still do not charge for their use. 5 – Carry tools Tools are very important on your trip, that’s why we prepared a previous blog about everything you should bring on a motorbike trip. We hope that you liked this blog and that it will help to encourage you to go on a longer trip or come to a wonderful country like Ecuador where we will provide you with everything, you need to make your trip spectacular.

Advantages of a motorcycle ride as couple

Advantages of a motorcycle trip with your partner. Yes, we also consider gender. The sky is the ceiling of the road. Would you dare to share as a couple a space smaller than your bed? For many, this is a dream. The lifestyles of motorcyclists are different, they are more alive and pure. You feel the air, the rain, and the sun, the contact with the outside world is direct, there are no barriers, there is no frame that cars usually surround us and it is something that in Ecuador Bike Rental we are very clear. Advantages of a motorcycle ride with a Couple You realize that nature, landscapes, and cities are alive, they are not only scenarios behind glass and especially in a country as beautiful as Ecuador. It is also easier to interact with the environment, to stop, take pictures of the mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and seas and observe the things that surround us. There is an old saying among motorcycle enthusiasts: “Driving a car is like watching a movie and riding a motorcycle is like starring in it”. Now let’s think about a loving couple who enjoy each other’s company but are exhausted by their day-to-day jobs. How can they improve their relationship? Combining motorcycles and couples can be a good option. According to psychologists and motorcycle enthusiasts like Sharon Ledger, couples who share a passion for motorcycles can increase trust and passion in the bedroom. As with anything, a little balance is important, but if you love the feeling of riding a motorcycle, you need to do it with your partner from time to time. Sharing a ride with someone is the perfect way to build a deeper connection. Think about what you love in life…, not that many things for sure, we help you to pick two things. If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, it’s probably your bike, and if you’re in a couple, it should also be your love. So if you have a motorcycle or like to travel on two wheels, don’t miss the chance to travel. As a couple can be very positive, as you get to spend more time together. Couples may live in the same house, but at the end of the day, the timeshare interest can be minimal and of poor quality. Work, kids, chores, TV, social media, and other distractions conflict with normal time. When a couple rides together on a motorcycle, they share a good time because they enjoy doing things they both enjoy. According to university research, couples who share common interests stay together.   Teamwork Continuing from above, sharing hobbies like motorcycle riding and two-wheel travel fosters teamwork and camaraderie. When planning a trip together, prioritizing shared tastes, negotiating, compromising, setting goals and objectives, and ultimately strengthening the communication bond between couples. Many online examples highlight the myriad challenges faced by couples traveling thousands of miles together, fostering strong connections. What tools bring for a motorbike trip?

We know that the vast majority of motorcycles use practically the same tools, so in this article, we will remind you which pieces, items or components are essential in your luggage when you go on a trip. (WHAT TOOLS TO TAKE FOR A MOTORCYCLE TRIP?)   As well as checking the bike before setting off on a long or short route, it is important to know what basic tools we should carry in our luggage for light mechanics and to avoid having a bad time: adhesive tape, cable ties, wrenches, pliers or screwdrivers should never be missing in a biker’s luggage. A cut chain, a puncture, or a broken cable or hose can make our trip a real ordeal, especially if we do not enter unknown routes or with little vehicular traffic, which is why it is important to have these tools in the luggage.   Electrical tape or insulating tape Although it is not a tool as such, it is important to have one at hand, since it is the perfect solution for a broken cable, hose, or simply a detached piece, that is why it is always advisable to carry one of these tapes (called type in some countries) in your luggage since they can get us out of many troubles. Detachable screwdriver This type of tool is very practical when it comes to loosening the screws to check a part or test a component of the bike, this screwdriver contains two tips with universal shapes, flat and stars, to facilitate the disassembly of a part, with one at hand you could solve many problems. Plastic and Nylon cable ties Another indispensable item for the biker are the cable ties, straps or clips, as they are also called, are plastic or nylon straps that come with an integrated zipper and are used to hold or tie any part that has come off the motorcycle, as well as to close bags or gather products. Cables They are necessary to make some electrical tie for cut or burn of another one that has the motorcycle, the important thing is to have a piece that is resistant and thick. Fuses They usually melt due to a short circuit or electrical failure or simply by use, that is why it is advisable to have a couple of fuses of different amperage between the tools. Normal and pressure pliers With a small pair of pliers, we could help us at the moment holding a screw or piece to carry out some mechanical work in our motorcycle, in addition they also serve to cut and tie cables or moorings. Allen wrenches They have a simple, small, and light design, so they do not take up a lot of space in the trunk. With a small set of these wrenches, you could solve many problems on the motorcycle, since many models use screws with hexagonal heads inside. Socket wrenches or socket wrenches: Here we enter in a variety of socket wrenches that you must take into account according to the model of your motorcycle, however, you can never miss one of 8, 10, 12, 13 millimeters, as well as 5/16, 1/2, 9/16, or 5/8 in some cases, since they are the most traditional and commonly used on motorcycles. These wrenches will solve the lowering of a part, component, or wheel, in case we have an accident.    Wrench A small wrench is enough, it will only be needed in case you do not have the wrench number of a certain bolt or to tighten a bolt with a nut or locknut. Spark plug wrench. It is another tool that cannot be missing, a spark plug can fail at any time and if you do not have this wrench, you could be stranded on the site. Check with the manufacturer which one is the one that adapts to your motorcycle. Spark plug If we have the key but we do not have the spare spark plug, we are left in the same place and without a solution, that is why it is necessary to have at least one new spark plug in our luggage. Master link or chain joint Another of the items that cannot be missing among the tools, at any time a chain breakage could occur and if we do not have this piece we can hardly get back on the road, so it is important to have at least two links that are of the same type or series of your chain. Puncture repair kit These are essential for motorcycles with normal wheels. They are used to repair a punctured tire or tube. WHAT IS THE LIST OF TOOLS TO CARRY ON A MOTORCYCLE TRIP? Having said that, here is a list (for reference purposes only) to “inspire” you as to what to bring and whether you need the Tool Roll MINI or MAX to fit everything. | Visit Us | What tools bring for a motorbike trip? | Our website
