REAR SUSPENSION The rest of its off-road quality depends on the Honda Pro-Link® rear suspension system, which offers comfort with a high level of wheel control. Soft starting grades allow for flexing action over small bumps. Conversely, stiffer grades resist bottoming out and maintain rear wheel control on rougher surfaces. FRAME The steel frame of the XR650L endures the intensity of off-road riding. The remaining frame backbone function is an engine oil reservoir to save weight and space and ease handling. 2023 HONDA XR650L COMFORT With the push of a button, the XR650L Electric Starter, the bike is ready to start. | Visit Us | Our website

Africa Twin: a history of competition

Frenchman Cyril Neveu officially conquered the toughest and most famous rally ever, winning the 1982 Paris Dakar aboard Honda’s XR 550. Furthermore, the Paris-Dakar, at the height of this tough test that started in the French capital and ended in Dakar, on the beaches of Senegal, along almost 15,000 km. It dominated, with Cyril Neveu, Edi Orioli, and Gilles Lalay securing victories for four consecutive years. The name  A little more than a year later the XRV 650 (official acronym of Africa) was transformed into 750, growing in displacement and overall size, gaining torque and power (60 hp), strengthening and sophisticating several elements of the cycle part, being this model tremendously popular and all in sales success, since being a motorcycle that allowed all types of driving was used both for long trips and for excursions on trails. The 750 was produced from 1986 to 2003, with a restyling that added a small onboard computer. It wasn’t until 2015, twelve years later, that the Africa Twin was reborn, changing its engine up to 1000cc. In 2018, after 30 years since its appearance, the legendary motorbike for its off-road capability continues to surprise with its latest model called Adventure Sports, a better-equipped version of the conventional dual-purpose, which will surely continue to add years of success, within its history.   Africa Twin facts and figures  With a massive 24-liter fuel tank, it offers unparalleled freedom, letting you journey up to 500 kilometers worry-free. Our Top 10 adventure motorcycles

So many top 10 adventure motorcycles out there and here is one more, the best. In Ecuador Bike Rental we got the best equipment! Worth to mention that, we had the feedback of our customers that have a fair background on motorcycle riding. Some of them possess more than one motorbike in their garage. Then came down to Ecuador to try a specific model for a bit more than a normal test drive. Let’s say three weeks on all sorts of roads. For some other models, we’ve tried them in Ecuador to find out what could be our best next purchase. Once again, the list is based on an overall score and criteria used on the field from us. 10. Moto Gucci V85TT I had the pleasure to test drive one of these bad boys in Europe and gotta tell you with those looks. Its distinctive V-twin engine, and ergonomics, is coming as a serious contender for its midsize classmates the BMW F850 and the Triumph Tiger. Gucci aimed pretty well with this model. This motorcycle has 80 HPs and 80 Nm as output. Way more than enough for what any common mortal would use while taking this motorbike where is meant to be: off-road. It was a normal test drive (about an hour) but fell in love with its characteristics and smoothness all around. To me on this model, maybe to have a 21″rim in front instead of a 19″. Would have made it a bit more dynamic on demanding off-roads, but the actual tire size made it enjoyable on asphalt. 9. HONDA XRE300 We have a bunch of these motorcycles in our fleet for one good reason, our customers are happy with it. They are lightweight, their fuel injection system is incredibly reliable at long timeframes. Also, under hardcore conditions and is such an enjoyable toy to play with. All of our customers that have used it. They always come back to the shop with a smile on their faces. 21 CVs are delivered by its 300cc engine, which makes it the opposite from intimidating, and fun on any skill level hands. Also, by being Honda, we have the support of one of the biggest motorcycle houses in Ecuador. So far, regardless of whatever mess we got ourselves into while opening routes. It has been as easy as fetching the motorbike with our GPS tracking device mounted on them. Take it to any dealer in the country, and it’s ready the day after. 8. KTM Super Adventure 1290R Simply awesome. I rode on a long trip this motorcycle last year when I borrowed from a friend of mine. It’s a KTM, and for its size, you won’t believe it how well it handles. Its got all types of perks, including a water-resistant “glove compartment” for your mobile with a charger inside. Torky and powerful to say the least and mixed with a pretty smart suspension. It goes on cobblestone roads as if it was first class pavement. Not a motorcycle for rookies for sure but its dashboard and controls were so intuitive, that made it feel as if it were. 7. Suzuki Vstrom 650 XT We’ve mentioned this motorcycle on previous blogs and I keep on bringing the subject. This is because is just well thought how they took an already excellent two-wheeled vehicle and just made it better. Two riding modes, spike rims, and less weight made the perfect combination to go deeper in the jungle. Higher in the mountains than its alloy-based wheels predecessors. Some of our clients just love the way it handles in a peaceful ride along the Spondylus route in the Ecuadorian Pacific Coast. For me, when it came to pushing it a bit more than usual it has proved to be really safe. It’s ABS reacts so precise to your situation, like when you are using brand new Continental TK70 on asphalt and you void to consider that fact and go a bit too loco. 6. Yamaha Tenere 660 This machine has its history and war medals, and now in 2019, we had the arrival of the new Tenere 700 with more stories to tell on its belt for sure. This is the first Yamaha that I get on and try it to be honest and boy it called my attention. A pretty easy to use, the machine well balanced and it feel way much lighter than what it looks. After a few hours of dirt roads, you can tell the significant difference that makes a 21-inch front wheel. 5. Triumph Tiger XCx The first time we saw this machine was at the annual convention of Horizons Unlimited where the dealer had a model for test-driving. Since we were organizing an off-road for the participants around the Cotopaxi volcano, we had in our tour BMW 1200GS, BMW F800, and the triumph tiger and so it was easy from the rear to see with similar driver skills what the motorcycle can do. For starters, as the rider related later, its traction control makes so hard to do any wrong on the dirt, even when you want to for the sakes of fun. And of course, for a mid-size bike to output 95 CV from a three-cylinder engine is something you are tempted to test how many of those you can actually use it. When I got to ride it, it came to my surprise how stable the motorcycle is, and note that it doesn’t have the lowest center of gravity of all. 4. Multistrada Enduro 1260 Years back I had the chance to race at the Pamplona San Fermin’s party with dozens of bulls on my back. And for the first time, I felt how it feels to ride one of them. It’s simply a beast with the most impressive Italian design and tech touches. From the heavyweights, I would consider this one something out of this planet. To start with, it doesn’t matter how bad the road gets, you still have

10 best touring motorcycles

10 best touring motorcycles for your holidays

Then you found yourself with a desire for an adventure, you have your motorcycle in the garage but for some reason, you think it wasn’t built for the job. When we first started to form Ecuador Bike Rental’s fleet, we wanted to do our best to accommodate the different needs of potential clients. That included the test drive, comprehensive research. We did a lots and lots of reading to see what could benefit riders that are passing by in Ecuador and would like to rent a specific motorcycle for touring around. So here are 10 best touring motorcycles for your holidays: Motorcycles Needless to say that every person is different, not only in sizes and shapes, strength, gender, and peculiar habits but also their touring circumstances are different. For some its a Han-Solo job, for others the means to share the adventure with their significant others and be more involved as a couple. You can have different ideas on luggage and riding gear, etc. The point is, that based on our research and what usually works for people. We’ve decided to divide this list into 3 categories: small motorcycles, mid-size and the big ones. Also, bear in mind that there are different definitions for this kind of motorcycles, such as dual, adventure, and touring. In a nutshell, a dual motorcycle is as Wikipedia states: “A dual-sport motorcycle is a type of street-legal motorcycle that is designed for both on and off-road use.” And yes, it’s basically that. You are riding along with the asphalt and suddenly is in your best’s adventure interests to jump onto the side dirt road 5 meters ahead aware that its suspension, tires, and frame are able to cope with the sudden change. An adventure motorcycle, as defined by many, is a kind of an added marketing name for a wide range of bikes. That goes from upright touring asphalt-purposed to dual / Enduro categories. From alloy to wire/spoke rims, tall seat foot controls in middle positions and wide handlebars. And on the other hand, we have touring motorcycles, which are bikes designed to hit the open road, mainly on asphalt. Big engines power these motorcycles, as they are intended to cover large distances with luggage and often carry two riders. Small size motorcycles These bikes used very often on off-roads, usually with no passenger and only the essentials to be carried. Its lightweight comes from engines that top around the 400cc, fewer accessories, and light but resistant body structure. There are many stories about people riding around the world with these bikes and also many rental companies on the planet use them as part of their fleet. Here we mention a few good models that have been battled tested by us and our clients. They are cheap to rent and cheap to fix. Royal Enfield Himalaya We thought of this motorcycle because hey, they use it in hardcore tours in the Himalayas. It has a 400cc engine based on a carburetor that is extremely easy to fix. Its position is comfortable. You can fit or adapt a lot of parts from other bikes in case of an emergency until you arrive at your destination. Its power around the Andes, needless to say, has proven to be more than enough. The factory equips it with some safety features such as skid plates and hand guards. Additionally, it includes a windshield high enough to cover up to the chin guard in your helmet. This bike simply has well-designed ergonomics. Placed with the right saddlebag mounts, you can carry two 35 lt soft luggage on each side, plus a 40 lt duffel on top. Is so easy to ride it, that I taught my girlfriend to ride on this one. Its the perfect tool for beginners and experienced adventurers alike. HONDA XRE300 A semi Enduro motorcycle ready to be taken off-road. This one came to replace in the market the hard-to-kill Honda Tornado. It have better features like fuel injection system, an electronic dashboard, and a pretty friendly fresh look. Its 27 HP and 28 Nm in torque have been enough to see customers taking off for more than 20 days fully loaded and come back more than happy. Once set with proper damage mitigators like skid plates and handguards. This bike has all it needs to throw the worse at it worry-free. No need to mention how maneuverable this motorcycle can be while touring around the city Yamaha XT250 With a strong off-road focus, the XT250 has been proven also worth its reputation. Despite its road-oriented bias, is the perfect companion for light trails during the weekend and urban traffic. It has what you need to enjoy your time on the bike and is pretty easy to work upon problems it might present. Mid-Size Motorcycles In this category fall most of the dual-sport models. Not a firm rule, but their engine ranges go from anywhere high 400cc to close to 800cc. Depending on the make and model, these bikes are the perfect companion for any adventure. As they are the most common in any region for spare parts, they are easy to repair. Any motorcycle touring magazine will give you more than one recommendation to look into these for a long-term adventure. The ones that make the grade for sure are: Suzuki DR650 It has what you need, period. Simple to fix, to maintain, to be loved. This motorcycle is the one we use to open routes with, to throw ourselves into the unknown. To know for sure we’ll come out flawless after going into rocky paths, or deep mud. The factory delivers around 44 HP from its engine, but you can easily tweak it to your liking. We’ve been lucky to house few overlanders like Suzie and Kelvin. Their way to Ushuaia and they had some not recent models of these bikes. Still, they made it all the way from Colombia to La Patagonia on not so friendly paths. We have some of these in

Africa twin DCT, our new toy

Sometimes you end up with no words after some experiences in life. Speechless as one can be, our experience with the Honda Africa Twin and the new automatic transmission (DCT) was simply out of any other bike. It was unlike any other we’ve ridden before. So before we continue, please bear in mind that we are not experienced motorcycle testers. However, our own experience provides us with valuable insights. We have ridden from Ecuador to Ushuaia twice, toured all around Europe, and competed as riders for Ducati in local and South American championships with good outcomes. This experience gives us a bit of intel on what to look for in a motorcycle. So here was our experience: Highest bike model We got brainwashed. The Africa Twin stood in the highest positions in all the shootouts on YouTube. It also appeared in comparisons between high-end adventure motorcycles. We made up our minds to go and get one of those bad-ass toys to include them in the fleet. As we walked into the dealer, its representative, Bernardo, welcomed us warmly. He then pointed out the section where various models were on display. Two things came to my mind right away: First, those stock tires…. it was like seeing a Range Rover fitted with slicks, I thought. Little did I know that those Bridgestone were going to prove me wrong later on. And the second thing was that I couldn’t help to compare the basic model with the 30th-anniversary DCT model standing right behind it. There was no doubt that if we were going to get one of these, we were going to get the best of it. Bernardo also pointed out that the bike was the last one in the country out of the few that came. No questions asked we decided to get it on behalf of our future customers at Ecuador Bike Rental by Sleipner. To be fair, we couldn’t push the bike too hard due to tires and engine break-in, but it didn’t disappoint. An ok first ride with this monster was obviously under controlled conditions. So we decided to take it to the beach riding through twisties from the Andes towards the coast. It took 30 minutes to get used to the lack of a clutch lever. Then figure it out what was the logic on the gear shifting and engine break while going from the mountains to the Pacific Coast. Riding modes Its got 3 riding modes to change its power output. Thanks to its HSTC (Honda Selectable Torque Control), engine brake and parameters like traction control, that can be changed on the fly in 7 levels or turn it off. The user mode allows you to modify the engine output, the engine break logic, and the traction levels. Once we became familiar with these commands, and in drive mode, we noticed that the bike leans a lot toward fuel consumption. You can override this by using the shifters on the left-hand side. So used to up/down normal shifting, I thought this was going to be a fallback on fun, but far from it, it makes it more interesting. According to some magazines, this lady has close to 80 riding modes for all likes in all its combinations. I don’t think we tested all of them. Drive mode Then, we decided to test a variation of the ‘Drive mode’. If you press the button enough, 3 levels of Sport mode open to you. With this, its own mapping of RPM selection for upshifting and downshifting thanks to its dual clutch system, which gives you the output needed for fun in the twisties and to hold gears off-road. And if that is not enough for you, you can always hit the manual mode as we did, and just do it manually. Perfecto! One plus of the Africa twin DCT, it allowed us to feel more relaxed on traffic jams. I felt like if we could ride 11 straight hours with a normal bike, with this one we could go over 15 easily. Few facts about power and stats on this particular model. Its overall ready-to-ride weight of 240 kg balances pretty well on-road and off-road. Off course, we had to test it in sand and dirt roads as well. Its 998cc, outputs some sweet 94 CV and 99 Nm in torque, making it more than enough while riding this bike where it’s supposed to be ridden, off-road. Other information That, mixed with increased travel in its front and rear suspension, contributes to its capability. Additionally, it features a 21-inch front wheel. There are also two little buttons on the right-hand side: G and ABS rear off. Together, these elements convert this gentle machine into a dirt devour. The asphalt sport-convertible you were riding before would suddenly feel like a war tank. It would be ready to tackle whatever comes its way. The Gravel button allows you to have a dryer response from the clutch. Meanwhile, the rear ABS turn-off switch allows you to have its tail exactly where you want it on corner entry. So back to those tires, we had monsoon like those that happen every few years in Ecuador on our way back to the Andes. Those tires gripped as much as we needed. And since we were already wet, thanks to our pre-programmed route GPS, we decided to cross a river whose depth is slightly less than a meter. Even with the “doubtful” rubbers, the bike managed to cross it with no hesitation. Once again, our guides are not professional rally racers, but this bike proved to forgive any hard mistake I did. So after 1000 km of testing, is pretty fair to shout how awesome this machine is. We’re really happy to have it on our fleet and to provide our customers with the best as we always strived. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. | Visit Us | Africa twin DCT, our new toy
