Ecuador and Colombia are two hidden gems of South America.

Ecuador, despite its size, is a kingdom that has it all, from the most beautiful coasts on the continent to the Amazon rainforest. It could be said that the vastness of this small territory encompasses so much in such a short space of time that you can explore each of its kingdoms in just a few hours. Go from the coastal breeze to the cold and mist of the Andes, and in a few more hours you’ll find yourself surrounded by the Amazon rainforest, which embraces you with its humidity and rain that bathes the trees. If you’re on the coast and want to experience one of the wonders of the world, all you need to do is take a flight or a cruise that will take you directly to the island region, where a protected treasure lies: the Galapagos Islands.

On this trip, you’ll discover many of Ecuador’s hidden secrets, and the advantage of being a small country is that its neighbors are closer than you think. You’re in luck, because on this tour, we’ll visit our coffee-growing neighbors. In a couple of hours to the north, we’ll come face to face with one of the most incredible forests you’ve ever seen, and a little further on, we’ll come across the border that divides the countries that were once part of the great Colombia.

Along the way, the landscapes, stories, legends, traditions, and cultures of both neighboring nations will take your breath away. You’ll see the differences and realize how similar we are at the same time. The lowest point at sea level will be 386 meters, and at its highest point, we’ll be 3,914 meters above sea level.

We warn you: after this unforgettable adventure between dirt and asphalt roads, you won’t want to stop riding a motorcycle through Latin America. We assure you, you’ll fall in love with this country at the center of the world.

Quito – El Angel (200km)

Quito is one of Latin America’s most compelling cities, known as “the face of God” Guarded by the Ring of Fire, the Andes mountain range, with its protectors: the Rucu Pichincha, Guagua Pichincha, Antisana, Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Pululahua, Atacazo, Ilaló, and Sincholagua volcanoes. This gives it a spectacular natural landscape; no matter where you look, you’ll find one of these sleeping giants. Ecuador’s capital combines modern and colonial architecture and offers a fascinating setting for visitors. In addition to being the country’s political center, it is also its cultural capital thanks to its churches, museums, festivals, and nightlife.

Our offices are located in the central part of the city, surrounding a commercial area full of shopping malls, bars, restaurants, and shops for all tastes. Upon arrival at the office, we’ll help you with the necessary documentation and provide you with the selected motorcycle equipment, as well as your chosen motorcycle for the tour.

After this brief but essential briefing, you’ll be ready to take control of your route with complete confidence. We want every curve and every kilometer traveled to make you feel proud of your skill and every achievement on this two-wheeled adventure. Quito is located 2,800 meters (9,000 feet) above sea level. A relatively short but fun-filled route.

We arrived at the hotel early to enjoy its attractions, especially the only primary forest of polylepis and frailejones in the world. Legend has it that in the El Ángel moors lived the mischievous and wise Curupí, guardian of the Polylepis forest, and nearby lived Ishuaquinua, a proud and beautiful young woman who forgot traditions and respect for nature. When Curupí asked her for a symbolic test: to take the eyes and hearts, she had three full moons to do it so that her people would not suffer the Where Curupí, through a spell, transformed her into a Polylepis tree. Before completing his transformation, Ishuaquinua embraced Curupí, and he too became a tree, intertwining their branches and roots forever, ymbolizing eternal love or eternal punishment for not respecting harmony with nature. Therefore, today, visitors to the Polylepis Forest can observe this natural phenomenon: two intertwined trees, representing the union of Ishuaquinua and Curupí, a reminder of the importance of respect and harmony with the natural environment.

In this area, we can observe a wide variety of fauna native to this climate, such as the Andean condor, a symbol of the country of a thousand faces, so important that it is part of our flag as a symbol of our people’s identity. We can also find pumas, white-tailed deer, and more. After a day full of adventures and an epic motorcycle ride, we will stay in one of the best eco-hotels in the country. Enjoy the hotel’s amenities for your comfort and relaxation: sauna, Turkish bath, whirlpool, cold-water baths, polar pool, and more.

At Polylepis Lodge, you can participate in various activities, such as visiting the museums located within the lodge, horseback riding, cycling, visits to nearby reservoirs and dams, and excursions (for example, to Laguna El Voladero and the Geovanny Calle Dam) to observe the landscapes, fauna, and flora. You can also enjoy the “Sky Swing” (the highest swing in Ecuador, approximately 4,000 meters above sea level). It’s an unforgettable experience.

El Angel – Pasto (Colombia) (181km)

We begin with magnificent scenery and riding our motorcycles towards the Colombian border. After completing the administrative procedures and paperwork, we’ll enjoy our first lunch in the country before continuing to Pasto. The beautiful city of Pasto, located approximately 2,527 meters above sea level at the foot of the Galeras Volcano, showcases its blend of indigenous, regional, African, and European roots. This can be easily recognized in its music, culture, celebrations, and handicrafts.

The city is renowned for its crafts, including wood carving, leather engraving, and weaving, among other things. Full of tradition, history, and color, the famous Las Lajas sanctuary stands out. Although not located in the city center, it is a must-do. This sanctuary is located atop a canyon, and its neo-Gothic architecture captivates many. Take advantage of this tour to rev your engine and dominate the asphalt like the king of the jungle. Push your limits and let the adrenaline fill your heart and pump through your veins as we go deeper in the country.

We’ll arrive at the hotel to unload our luggage and enjoy a delicious lunch with typical regional dishes, such as roasted guinea pig, empanadas de añejo (aged cheese empanadas), mote de queso (cheese mote), and fritanga pastusa (pastusa fritters).

Pasto – Popayan (245km)

A winding road awaits us as we enter the Colombian Andes. The aroma of coffee and fruit begins to be perceived.
It will take us approximately 4 to 5 hours to reach our destination, Popayán. Along the way, we will travel through the Colombian Andes, where we will appreciate the emerald beauty of mountains, vast valleys, and roads that will allow our motorcycles to glide between the mountains, blending seamlessly with the landscape. Near Pasto, we will come across La Cocha Lagoon, a glacial lake nestled on a mountain 2,800 meters above sea level.

On the shores of this majestic body of water lies the “Green Venice of Nariño.” The town of Encano, whose streets are surrounded by the lagoon’s canals, where houses float and flowers are found everywhere. Legend, as told by the town’s locals, says that deep within the lake, a prosperous and ancient city was punished by the gods for its people’s pride, and was submerged at the bottom of the lake.

Continuing our motorcycle tour, we will reach our destination: Popayán, located 1,760 meters above sea level. It is known as the White City of Colombia for the exquisite workmanship of its colonial structures. It preserves one of the best-preserved historic centers in the Americas, with imposing churches and stone bridges, each of which tells the story of the city’s vast history. Worth to mention that at this point, you’ll feel the benefit of the power of your KTM, Honda, or Suzuki.

The city is also famous for being the birthplace of thinkers and artists, where its Holy Week celebration was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. You will be amazed by its cuisine, which has also been recognized by UNESCO. You can taste delicacies for the palate such as pipián empanadas, Payanes tamales and refreshing “champús”

Popayan – Cali (140km)

The trip between Popayán and Cali is a journey that captivates the senses and thrills any motorcycle touring enthusiast. As we delve deeper into coffee-growing country, the landscape transforms into a collection of verdant mountain panoramas, with curves that invite you to slow down to appreciate the view of this work of art.

Like a bridal veil, the fog falls like the curtain of a masterpiece, only to dissipate and reveal its treasure, the Cauca Valley, with endless fields of sugarcane and the warm embrace of its seasonal climate. As we embark on this sugary adventure, we advance crouched like felines hunting our prey, the engine purring beneath us.

We wind through canyons and ravines, with perfect spots for photography that will make you dream of a prize. At some point along the way, the roar of the engine and the roar of the rivers that cross this valley will sync with yours. Feel free to taste delicious freshly roasted coffee, just like an Argentine sommelier tastes a good wine. We will briefly visit the indigenous community of the Guambianos, residents of Silvia, who, despite the passage of time, continue to maintain their traditions with their traditional clothing and handicrafts.

Connect with the roots of their ancestors, learning about their culture, where their hospitality will not be long in coming. You’ll know we’re approaching the city of Cali when our path is lined with palm trees and a warm breeze, characteristic of the coast.

Just as in Brazil, there is a Christ who rises and watches over the city, from here. you can appreciate it in all its splendor. It’s the perfect end to a trip full of contrasts (climate, culture, and landscape) that can be experienced on a motorcycle with the freedom and intensity that only a road tripper can understand.

Cali – Ibague  (261km)

Traveling by motorcycle from Cali to Ibagué isn’t just a trip; it’s a feast of adrenaline and freedom on two wheels. From the moment you start the bike, the purr of the engine vibrates in your chest, the power responds to every twist of the throttle, and you feel the road become a canvas where you, the bike, are the artist.

The wind hits your helmet as you take the first turn, and the sensation of speed mixed with the landscape that changes with every kilometer generates a pure, almost electric emotion that only a motorcyclist can understand, with the horsepower giving its all, fulfilling your wildest whims.

The first kilometers through the Cauca Valley are a choreography, between you and the valley, of accelerations and braking, of gentle climbs that allow you to test the power of the engine, and descents where the adrenaline makes you smile involuntarily, like a child who has committed that prank for which you were punished. Between palm trees and sugarcane fields, the roar of the motorcycle mingles with the birdsong, and suddenly you’re part of their flock. The scent of damp earth creates a sensorial atmosphere that intensifies every sense like the frenzy of a shark. Drops of moisture hit your helmet as you enter the San Antonio forest, where the road narrows at every turn. Within this pressure, the opposite effect occurs: you feel free, in this forest, in search of a king to conquer it.

Finally, upon arriving in Ibagué, after hours of changing landscapes and intense emotions, you feel complete satisfaction: not only did you reach your destination, but every kilometer was an adventure, a journey that made your heart beat faster and reminded you why riding a bike is about living.

Ibague – Tatacoa Deseret (172km)

From Ibagué to the fascinating Tatacoa Desert, the adventure begins with off-road dosis, a journey that combines adrenaline, changing landscapes, and cultural experiences.

From the first kilometers, you’ll enjoy twisting mountain roads surrounded by abundant Andean vegetation and spectacular canyons formed over time, the ideal opportunity for the most surreal photos with our ADV motorcycles in the frame.

Along the way, we’ll see the Combeima Canyon, a paradise on earth, famous for its flora and fauna, which give life to its ecological trails. The birds welcome you with their songs, and its cuisine captivates you. You’ll know we’re near the desert when the climate changes to a drier and more arid one. And the town of Villavieja seems like something out of a cowboy movie from those days.

The reddish stones will give us the clue that we’ve arrived; rock labyrinths welcome us as we pass through them, and the contrasting gray stones are part of the same desert, like twins. It may be just a desert, but we assure you there’s plenty to do in this fantasy place.

Tatacoa Deseret (Rest day)

Wake up to the first rays of sunlight illuminating the reddish desert formations. There’s no rush today; the asphalt is behind you, and the day is made for experiencing the immensity of Tatacoa in all its expression.
Hiking will be our guide today. We’ll pass through crimson labyrinths where shadows change shape as the sun rises.

As evening falls, we’ll refresh ourselves in a natural pool amidst the unreal scenery, as if straight out of Wonderland. As night falls, and after a delicious meal, enjoy the Milky Way in all its splendor.
Just raise your gaze and watch the lights shine from the celestial vault. In the afternoon, the route invites you to explore the Los Hoyos area, a perfect contrast with its gray and brownish tones and its natural pool, where you can refresh yourself after the hike.

Here, the energy of the desert transforms: it becomes calmer and more introspective. A place to disconnect, from the hustle and bustle of the world and let yourself be enveloped by the echo of the wind.

Tatacoa Deseret – San Agustin (280km)

Dawn paints the Tatacoa mountains golden, and the roar of engines break the desert silence.
Today, the route changes its appearance: from the arid heat and reddish dust, we move on to roads that wind their way through mountains, rivers, and dense jungles toward San Agustín.

It’s a long and demanding journey, full of visual rewards, perfect for those who enjoy feeling the vibration of the road beneath their wheels.
As we continue, the reddish tones of the desert give way to intense greens. The towns of Neiva and Pitalito welcome us with open arms to learn about their culture and history, where we can stop to enjoy freshly roasted coffee and a traditional lunch overlooking the valleys.

The road becomes apparent when we begin to hear the Magdalena River nearby, as if it were the host escorting us to our destination today. This reminds us that we are traveling through the geographic heart of Colombia. San Agustín, our final destination, is not far behind, as it is yet another city in this surprising country to have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. After a day of pure adventure, arriving here feels like reaching a sacred destination: where history, nature, and a passion for the journey come together.

San Agustin – Pasto (305km)

After breakfast, we depart for the city that welcomed us to this coffee-producing country. It’s the longest day of the trip, so we have to leave early. From San Agustín, we’ll embark on a long journey south to Mocoa, where there are more motorcycles than people, right on the border between the Andes and the Amazon basin.

Here we turn sharply west and begin the famous Trampolín de la Muerte, also known as the Devil’s Springboard, which is a delight on a motorcycle. As the sun rises, the fog slowly dissipates, revealing a breathtaking landscape: endless mountains, deep chasms, and waterfalls that seem ready to touch the ground, but just before they do, they vanish, leaving only the sound of their path as evidence. The bike vibrates beneath your feet, and every curve demands precision, serenity, and respect for the terrain.

This isn’t a road for everyone; it’s a section designed for those who love to feel pure adrenaline coursing through their veins. After emerging victorious from this test of courage, experience, and passion for motorcycling, covered in mud but with our hearts full of pride for this achievement, we will descend gently toward the city of Pasto once more.

To return to the land of flowers and bananas, the tricolor country located halfway around the world.

Pasto – Otavalo (Ecuador) (256km)

After the intensity of the Devil’s Jump, dawn in Pasto feels different: the air is fresh, the mind is clear, and the body is ready for another epic adventure. We will cross the administrative border again where they’ll inspect our motorcycles. The invisible line that separates us, but it is well known that we are tricolor brothers. Our hearts pump like gasoline entering an engine as we head toward Otavalo on a road that promises valleys, mountains, and Andean villages.

Upon arriving in Otavalo, you can appreciate the colorful and distinctive clothing of its inhabitants in its market of aprons and handicrafts, an emblematic place in the country and highly appreciated by many foreigners, with its immense lake that covers an area of 2.5 square kilometers. Legend says that long ago there were two volcanoes that were deeply in love, but this was not accepted by the father of Mama Cotacachi (volcano).

So, Taita Imbabura (volcano) lay down on the ground and let himself die; the tears he shed for his beloved formed this lake. Among the shapes of the Imbaura volcano, when the sun hits a certain point, a heart shape is formed, representing the love it has for Mother Cotacachi. At this location, 2,500 meters above sea level, in this magical town, we can find unique wonders, such as the Peguche waterfall, a water feature used by the indigenous people as a purification ritual.

Nearby, we can find Condor Park, which is known for its conservation and observation of Andean birds of prey.

Otavalo – Mindo (240km)

The roar of the engine sets off the alarm in Otavalo as we leave this magical town behind. We’re enveloped in mist and chill, our helmets catching the wind. The road welcomes us with its imposing emerald surfaces lining the way, heading towards the city of Mindo. On our journey south, we’ll witness countless breathtaking landscapes.

You’ll know we’re nearing our destination by the change in climate and the distinctive sounds of the cloud forest. The city of Mindo is known as the bird capital, with 133 endemic species. A place of many facets, offering a variety of activities to suit your tastes, such as visiting the butterfly garden or tubing.

If you’re more of an Indiana Jones type, there are the Tayos Caves, whose stories vary, from the existence of a vast library with tomes carved from metal plates containing human history, guarded by the spirits of the forest and the Shuar people. If you prefer something more tranquil, the ecological trails and birdwatching allow you to reconnect with nature in its purest form.

Each activity awakens that perfect combination of adrenaline and wonder that every cyclist seeks off-road. Finally, you arrive at the heart of Mindo, a hidden refuge nestled in the mountains, brimming with life and color. Here, the sound of the motorcycles fades, giving way to birdsong and the murmur of the river.

After so many kilometers traveled, we’ll arrive at our hotel to stretch our legs and chat about our adventures over a delicious meal.

Mindo – Santo Domingo (100km)

The songs of insects and birds awaken us in a warm atmosphere. The scent of damp earth fills our thoughts, bringing us to the present moment and where we are. We mount our motorcycles, ready for today’s leg of the journey.

The weather will change, as will the colors. From the intense green of the cloud forest to a softer green, with palm trees and plantations of cacao, palm, and bananas. Along the way, you can stop in Los Bancos to enjoy a fresh juice or try the local green empanadas, a classic route that no traveler should miss. The road to Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas combines long straight stretches with gentle curves that invite you to accelerate and feel the tropical breeze on your helmet. At this point, we are 625 meters above sea level, hence the relatively high temperature. Santo Domingo is a key city connecting Esmeraldas and Quito, as it is located midway between them.

Along the way, you can stop in Los Bancos to enjoy a fresh juice or try the local green empanadas, a classic route that no traveler should miss. The roar of the engine blends with the sounds of the lowland rainforest, reminding you that every kilometer in Ecuador offers a different facet of the country. Upon arriving in Santo Domingo, the change in energy is palpable.

The city vibrates with movement, music, and human warmth. Here you can visit the indigenous Tsáchila community, who to this day maintain their ancient customs, still dyeing their hair with natural pigments like achiote, which is also used in cooking. Nearby are the Tinalandia waterfall and the Toachi River, where you can hike or raft.

Today was a day of transition, but also a perfect example of why Ecuador is a paradise for those who live on two-wheels.

Santo Domingo – Quilotoa lake (130km)

The day begins early, with our motorcycles out loud cutting through the humid air of Santo Domingo. The journey promises change, altitude, and pure excitement. The route climbs rapidly into the mountains, leaving behind the warm climate and the scent of damp earth.

In a matter of hours, the landscape transforms: this tropical green dissolves into a mist that begins to descend like the curtain of a play, about to begin its next act. After a few kilometers of this metallic beast’s roaring engine, Andean meadows open up, stretching to the sky. Arriving in Latacunga, we’ll see the customs that characterize the Ecuadorian highlands, but with distinct, unique touches from this city. Like a painting decorating the blue landscape, Cotopaxi, the country’s second-highest volcano, rises majestically, surrounded by diverse communities. To combat the chill, in true Ecuadorian tradition, enjoy a hot chocolate with cheese and let it melt inside.

After fueling up with chocolate and warming up from the chill, with our chests snuggled up, the engine is switched on, and adrenaline surges, fueling our hunger for adventure. As we approach Zumbahua, the temperature drops and the air thins. The road narrows, and we begin the final stretch to the Quilotoa crater, one of Ecuador’s most breathtaking landscapes. The dormant volcano reveals a turquoise lagoon within, shimmering in the midday sun.

This is an active volcano, and it’s this, along with other factors— perhaps the crater’s minerals—that gives its waters their emerald and turquoise hues. The climb to the crater will test your physical condition, but after everything we’ve experienced so far, it’s certainly not going to stop us. Reaching the summit will make it all worthwhile. Quilotoa is more than a destination: it’s a reward. After kilometers of winding roads, steep climbs, and contrasting climates, you find yourself in one of the most magical places in the country.

Some travelers choose to descend to the lagoon, while others prefer to admire it from above as the sun sets over the Andes. In any case, this day encapsulates the essence of being a motorcyclist: experiencing the open road intensely and going further than you ever thought possible.

Quilotoa lake – Baños de Agua Santa (170km)

In the morning, if it weren’t for the tiger-print blanket—just ask your guide—the cold would chill us to the bone, but waking up to this amazing volcano and its crater is priceless. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll warm up because we’re now heading to one of the most breathtaking and beautiful places, creating a harmony that captivates you with its beauty and its sheer exhilaration.

There’s plenty to do and choose from during the day, and the same goes for the night, with friendly people from all over the world. Once again, we’ll experience a climate change we know all too well, from the cold of the Andes to the humid, tropical climate of the gateway to the Amazon, as the city of Baños de Agua Santa is known.

This, in a matter of less than an hour on board of the KTM, Honda, Suzuki or triumph that you selected, to mention few. So, between curves and straightaways, we’ll unleash the horsepower at our disposal and feel that freedom that only a biker knows, and that only birds seem to know by heart. Along this route, there are many biological gems to explore, such as hidden waterfalls, suspension bridges, and trails that could lead us to our destination.

Once in Baños, you’ll feel the urge to get off your motorcycle and explore this extraordinary destination. From the Pailón del Diablo (Devil’s Cauldron), whose immense waterfall can be enjoyed from a suspension bridge or directly beneath it, to the many extreme sports this city offers, or the hot springs fed by the Tungurahua volcano, which is still active and whose fumaroles can occasionally be seen from the viewpoint.

Baños de Agua Santa (Rest day)

Today is a day of exploration in the city, where you choose what to do. The atmosphere is filled with the sound of the many waterfalls surrounding Baños. It’s said that from a certain vantage point when visiting the Pailón del Diablo (Devil’s Cauldron), you can see the devil’s face formed by the bridge. Or you can visit the Manto de la Novia (Bride’s Veil) waterfall, which is a great motorcycle ride close to Baños, which can be appreciated from a cable car in a metal basket.

You set the adrenaline level. If you’re looking for more intense thrills, rafting on the Pastaza River is a great option, where your blood heats up like gasoline in your heart, which beats as fast as the engine of our motorcycles. But if you want a more controlled kind of adrenaline rush with a better view of the entire valley and its mountains, we recommend the treehouse, which has a swing with a 100-meter drop from the top of a mountain. It’s known as “The Swing at the End of the World.”

If you’re interested, we can take a short 60 km trip, either by bicycle or motorbike, to see the waterfall route between Baños and Puyo. It’s not all about speed, but also about appreciating the wonders this country offers.

At sunset, after a relaxing soak in the hot springs, which will loosen our muscles and calm our minds, the city comes alive with its various bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. A little dancing and partying won’t hurt. Today, Baños becomes a buffet for our emotions.

Baños de Agua Santa – Quito (182km)

After 16 days of pure adventure, our journey comes to an end. We’ll leave Baños early in the morning to head to the capital city, from which we departed 15 days ago. The road, with its winding curves that seduce the rider, lends itself to unleashing the full power of the motorcycle and letting the wind rush past our helmets at every turn.

Everywhere you look, you’ll find imposing volcanoes that seem to watch over the capital. Quito blends history and modernity on every street. Its colonial center, with churches, museums, and plazas, blends seamlessly with contemporary architecture, shopping malls, bars, and restaurants, creating a captivating atmosphere for every visitor.

At 2,800 meters above sea level, the final experience recounts the conquest of two countries in two weeks of travel. A light snack awaits us at the office, marking the end of our journey. The stories and memorable moments will live on in our minds forever.
